Club FAQs

What are we?

Waverley Raiders is a junior domestic basketball club for boys & girls with teams ranging from U8 - U23. We are an incorporated club with close to 200 playing members and approximately 27 teams.

Where do we play?

Our teams currently are entered in the Melbourne East Basketball Association (MEBA) Junior Domestic Competitions. The stadiums are located in the South Eastern and Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. The club offers mixed (boys/girls) teams from U8 - U12, and separate boys/girls teams from U12 - U23. The boys/mixed play on Saturdays (with the younger age groups typically playing in the mornings, and the older age groups in the afternoon/evenings). The girls from U12 onwards typically play in the Saturday competition, however a mid-week competition is available if numbers allow it.

How much does it cost to join?

Waverley Raiders believes in keeping costs to a minimum to encourage as many young players to enjoy playing basketball. One up-front fee of $140 per season (there are 2 seasons in a year) covers the cost of Training Venue Hire, Game Scoresheet Fees, Registration, Insurance and Singlet Hire. A one-off $20 deposit must also be paid on the singlet. This will be refunded when the player leaves the club and returns the singlet.

Families with more than 3 children registered per season will receive a discount of $10 per child.

It pays to volunteer as a coach! If you are a parent who volunteers to coach, the club will waive the registration fee for your child for every season you continue to coach a team.

Entry fee to all stadiums is a once-off $2 per person (get a stamp for re-entry!).

Playing seasons and age groups?

There are two seasons per year. The Summer season runs from October through until March with a break from mid-December through until late January. The Winter season runs from May through until August though games are not played on the middle weekend of the school term holidays. For specific dates please see the Winter 2008 dates file.

To play in the Winter competition a player must be under the nominated age as at the 31 December of the previous year. (eg: to play in U12's for Winter 2008 Season, the player must be 11 or under at 31/12/2007). To play in the Summer competition a player must be under the nominated age as at the 30 June of the current year. (eg: to play in U12's for Summer 2008/2009 Season, the player must be 11 or under at 30/6/2008).

Uniforms?

The club is unique as it hires out it's playing singlets to its members (the hire being part of the registration fee). In this way, no further costs are incurred if a player grows out of his singlet - the club will just swap it for a larger one. Playing club shorts must be purchased from the Uniform Coordinator (at around $40 each). To ensure singlets are returned when players leave the club, players must also play a fully-refundable $20 deposit.

As a description, the club colours are: Light Blue Playing Singlet, with Navy Blue & White Pipping and Side-Strips with the "Raiders" club name on the front, and "Waverley Raiders" on the back. Club shorts are navy with light blue & white strips.

Our Uniform Coordinator can assist you in any uniform needs that you may require (see Contacts page for contact details).

How do we select teams?

In the Winter 2004 season we started to run Team Selections per Age Group so our club selects the strongest team per grade and Age Group. This process involves the Age Group Coordinator and coaches to watch the players in action on court, their skills, attitude and potential.

We will endeavour to be as accountable as possible when selecting teams, with the best 8 players being selected per team/per grade.

Waverley Raiders does NOT cut players. The doors are wide open to all, from beginners to very experienced A-Grade players and an effort will be made to ensure every registered player (before the cut off date) is in a team that is suitable to the skills they have.
